You can increase and decrease the size of the tiles with the Increase Square Size and Decrease Square Size menu commands. You can increase and decrease the thickness of the mortar lines with the Increase Mortar Width and Decrease Mortar Width menu commands. The effect should become more pronounced as you increase the size of the tiles, and it should become less pronounced as you decrease the width of the mortar lines.
The apparent tilt of the mortar lines is caused by orientation-sensitive simple cells in the striate cortex. The cells interact with one another to interpret the diagonal bands produced by the retina as a single continuous line, tilted in the direction of the diagonal bands. It has been shown that these simple cells can be inhibited by the insertion of a dot of opposite contrast in the middle of the bar to which they are sensitive. Thus, inserting dots of opposite contrast in the mortar lines between squares of like contrast decreases the strength of the effect. Inverting the contrasts of those dots causes the effect to be stronger than normal. Use the Add Dots and Invert Dots menu commands to observe these effects. You can increase and decrease the size of the dots with the Increase Dot Size and Decrease Dot Size menu commands.
